Today in Earth Science, our 6th graders dove into the fascinating world of Joan Murrell Owens and her groundbreaking work in oceanography and coral studies! 🪸🌎
Using a simple but powerful experiment, we explored how different ocean layers affect where corals can live. 🌊☀️
What We Did:
We layered honey (deep ocean 🌑), dish soap (twilight zone 🌘), and water (surface ocean ☀️) in a jar. Then, we dropped in sponge pieces to represent coral and observed where they settled.
What We Learned:
🔹 Corals need sunlight to grow, which is why they only thrive in the top ocean layer.
🔹 The deep ocean is too dark and dense for coral survival.
🔹 The twilight zone has some light but isn’t enough for coral to flourish.
🔹 The surface ocean provides just the right conditions for coral reefs to grow!
Joan Murrell Owens' research helped scientists better understand deep-sea coral species, and today, our students got a hands-on look at why coral reefs only exist in certain ocean layers.

Floating Astronauts in 6th Grade Earth Science! ✨🚀
Today in 6th grade Earth Science, we explored how astronauts float in space with a fun and eye-opening zero-gravity simulation! 🌎🧪
Using water, vegetable oil, and small objects, students observed how different materials behave in different environments—just like in space! 🌌
🔬 Key Observations:
✅ Oil floated on top of the water because it is less dense 🌊
✅ Some objects sank, floated, or got suspended between layers, just like astronauts in microgravity! 🧑🚀
✅ We learned that gravity (or the lack of it!) changes how things move and interact!
This hands-on experiment helped us understand why there is no “up” or “down” in space and how astronauts experience a weightless environment. The classroom was filled with "whoa!" moments and plenty of scientific discoveries!
